An Iowa-class battleship, 887 feet long with a main armament of nine sixteen-inch guns and a top speed of 33 knots, the USS Missouri, "Mighty Mo," was launched January 29, 1944 and commissioned June 11, 1944. It was there, on board the Missouri, that the Japanese Empire surrendered to the Allied Powers on September 2, 1945.
