The George Washington Class fleet ballistic missile submarine USS Robert E. Lee was named for General Robert E. Lee, the great commander of the Confederate States of America's Army of Northern Virginia, who fought against overwhelming odds until forced to surrender to Union General Ulysses S. Grant. It was Lee's honor and commitment to the re-united states that helped heal the nation. In the upper right of this print is the emblem/patch of the USS Robert E. Lee, on which the outline of General Lee on his warhorse Traveller is clearly visible.
The USS Robert E. Lee was commissioned on September 16, 1960 and decommissioned on December 1, 1983 after over 20 years of dedicated service. It was 381 feet long and 33 feet wide at the beam and displaced 5,959, tons on the surface and 6,709 tons submerged. This magnificent nuclear powered submarine carried 16 Polaris missiles and stood at the forefront of America's defense during the Cold War.
This beautiful, mint condition print measures 11" x 17" and is personally signed and dated by the artist.
