CSS Tennessee against the Union Forces at the Battle of Mobile Bay, August 5, 1864.
At 5:30 a.m. on August 5 Union ships headed for the entrance of Mobile Bay. The Union's monitors opened fire first. It would be thirty minutes later before Fort Morgan would reply in cannon fire upon the USS Brooklyn. The CSS Tennessee came out followed by the Confederate gunboats and headed directly for the Union line. Admiral Farragut, commander of the USS Hartford recognizing that the Tennessee had cleared the minefield, ordered the charge to Fort Morgan. Farragut headed across the minefield, hence the famous saying "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!" After a second day of fighting and under considerable fire, The Tennessee would surrender and Mobile Bay would yield to Federal control.
