It was a period of calm amid the storm of war. Robert E. Lee's heralded Army of Northern Virginia was in winter camp near Virginia's Rappahannock River. Weeks before, in one of the bloodiest engagements of the war, they had turned back attack after attack by a powerful Northern army at the Battle of Fredericksburg. Now awaiting another Northern invasion, the men in gray and butternut enjoyed a rare time of relative quiet. General Thomas J. ("Stonewall") Jackson had made his headquarters at Moss Neck, a pastoral Virginia plantation near Fredericksburg. Jackson had come to Moss Neck for a night, but his troops would remain encamped here for three months. He would entertain his wife here and spend his first days with his infant daughter. Here too, he and Lee would make battle plans, waiting for the enemy's next move and planning a campaign they hoped would hasten the end of the war.

On January 20, 1863, Lee and Jackson conducted a review of General J.E.B. Stuart's cavalry -- the troops who held the line along the Rappahannock that winter. As commander of Lee's cavalry, Stuart had earned the general's praise. The horse soldiers he had assembled for review at Moss Neck had also gained Lee's respect-and held additional interest for the general: among them was a regiment commanded by the general's second son, Brigadier General W.H.F. ("Rooney") Lee, who had been recently promoted to brigadier for his actions in battle.

"THE REVIEW AT MOSS NECK" was a colorful event: Lee, Jackson, and Stuart reviewing the Southern troops who were already earning glory as one of history's greatest fighting forces. Ahead, unknown to all, another storm of war gathered. In the spring to come, Jackson's troops would leave Moss Neck, and Lee and Jackson would claim their greatest (and last) victory together at the Battle of Chancellorsville.
