On board is W/O Mynarski, who will be awarded a Posthumous VC in a weeks time. Lancaster V-RA had a young Canadian crew under the command of Andrew Mynarski. At first light on D-Day, June 6, 1944, the bomber made a low-level strike, bombing the heavy coastal gun emplacements at Arromanches in Northern France from just 1,500 feet, a spectacular and exceptionally dangerous mission.
This print shows the Lancaster bomber returning to its base in Colerne. Within a week the bomber would be shot down by a Luftwaffe Ju88 night fighter and Mynarski would lose his life trying to save a trapped crewmen. Andrew Mynarski was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross.
