Schweinfurt, Danzig, St. Nazaire, Whilhemshaven, Munster, Berlin – Names that set pulses to racing as Eighth Air Force crews were briefed for the day's target. Some had been before. For others it was a new and daunting challenge. All knew it meant barrages of flak, swarms of enemy fighters, sub-zero temperatures, and possible capture, injury – or the unthinkable. But all gathered their kit and went. The lucky ones came home and, as the familiar coastline of England became visible from their cockpits, they could relax for the first time and dare to think beyond today.

In "SAFE HAVEN," shadows lengthen on an autumn afternoon in 1944 as B-24J Liberators, return from a typical daylight raid, safely crossing the English coast above a tranquil Suffolk estuary. Beneath them, as an air-sea rescue amphibian prepares to disembark a fortunate airman, rescued earlier following ditching in the North Sea, villagers gaze upwards in friendly admiration. Shown are the B-24s of the 329th Bomber Squadron (P.P.F.) of the 93rd Bomb Group. Known as the 'Traveling Circus,' the 93rd BG was the oldest serving B-24 Group and flew more missions than any other in the Eighth Air Force.

In addition to the artist this print is individually signed in pencil by FOUR B-24 aircrew:

  • Major PHILLIP ARDREY
  • Brigadier General JOHN BROOKS III
  • Colonel WILLIAM CAMERON
  • Colonel ALBERT SHOWER

Comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
