In 1939 the German pocket-battleship Graf Spee roamed the South Atlantic sinking over 50,000 tons of British merchant ships. In December 1939 three Royal Navy cruisers engaged the Graf Spee in the Battle of the River Plate. Two cruisers were badly damaged, but the Graf Spee was also hit. The Graf Spee put into the neutral port of Montevideo for repairs. Believing he was trapped by superior forces, Captain Langsdorf scuttled the mighty Graf Spee.
