The ironclad CSS Fredericksburg under fire from Union guns at Trent's Reach on the James River.
The beginning of 1865 wasn't looking well for the Confederate cause. In a last ditch effort a plan was devised to break the Union's blockade of the James River. If successful in breaking the blockade the Confederates would then destroy the Union Army's supply depot at City Point, Virginia.
January 23, 1865 the ironclads CSS Fredericksburg, the CSS Virginia II, the CSS Richmond along with five smaller vessels started out for the Union's obstruction line. At 10:30 P.M. the small fleet arrived at Trent's Reach.
