The Japanese destroyer Makigumo goes down at the hands of PT-124 in 1943. On the night of 1 February 1943 PT-123 and PT-124 closed on a target together. PT-123 was hit by a bomb and put out of commission. Clark Faulkner's 124-boat pressed on, launching three torpedoes at 1,000 yards. The Makigumo erupted. Damage caused the Makigumo to take on water leaving her to sit lower; she consequently struck a mine off Savo Island on the following night and sunk.
